FHIR Code Lookup
A curated offline list of common LOINC, SNOMED CT and ICD-10 codes and FHIR value set codes. Copy any code as a FHIR Coding with the right system URI.
- Look up common LOINC, SNOMED CT and ICD-10 codes and FHIR value set codes, and copy ready-made Coding blocks.
How to use Code Lookup
- Search by code, name or description:
8867-4,heart rate,diabetes. - Filter by code system to narrow the results.
- Copy just the code, or a complete FHIR
Codingwith the correctsystemURI, ready to paste into a resource.
The list is built into the page, so searches work offline and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
What's included
A curated set of frequently used codes for building and testing FHIR resources:
- LOINC — common vital signs and lab tests (heart rate, blood pressure, body weight, glucose, HbA1c, lipid panel and others).
- SNOMED CT — common conditions, procedures and findings.
- ICD-10 — common diagnosis codes.
- FHIR and HL7 code systems — the small value sets you need constantly: Observation category, administrative gender, Encounter class, Condition clinical and verification status, AllergyIntolerance type and category, and more.
It's a quick reference, not a terminology server. LOINC has over 100,000 codes and SNOMED CT several hundred thousand concepts, so most codes aren't here. For full searches, use the official browsers linked on this page (LOINC Search, the SNOMED CT browser, the ICD-10 browser) or a terminology server's $lookup and $expand operations.
Worked example
Searching heart rate and copying the Coding gives:
{
"system": "http://loinc.org",
"code": "8867-4",
"display": "Heart rate"
}
Paste it into Observation.code.coding. The system URI is the part people most often get wrong: http://loinc.org, not a web page address like https://loinc.org/8867-4/.
Why there are no CPT codes
CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) is owned by the American Medical Association, and its descriptions are licensed. Rather than publish unlicensed or paraphrased descriptions, this tool leaves CPT out. If you're licensed, the system URI is http://www.ama-assn.org/go/cpt.
Codes to double-check
- ICD-10 vs ICD-10-CM. The codes here are labelled with the WHO ICD-10 system (
http://hl7.org/fhir/sid/icd-10). US claims and problem lists use ICD-10-CM (http://hl7.org/fhir/sid/icd-10-cm), which has more specific codes. Check which one your receiver expects. - Displays are informational. Systems match on
system+code. A slightly differentdisplaytext isn't an error, but a wrong code is.
FHIR Terminology Explained covers Coding vs CodeableConcept, binding strengths and terminology server operations.
FAQ
Can I check whether a code is valid?
This list can confirm a code only if it's one of the included codes. To validate any code, call $validate-code on a terminology server such as tx.fhir.org, or use the official HL7 validator.
Are these codes free to use?
LOINC (with attribution), ICD-10 and the HL7 code systems are free to use. SNOMED CT is free in SNOMED International member countries and needs a license elsewhere.
Which code system versions are the codes from?
They're stable, long-standing codes that haven't changed meaning in recent releases. Displays are abbreviated, and a code system's own display can differ. If you need the exact official display for a version, use a terminology server's $lookup.
Does my search go anywhere?
No. The list is part of the page, so searches run locally and work even if you lose your connection after the page has loaded.
